Healthy communication and working in diverse teams

  • Communication is at the core of every aspect of our roles, and interactions with not only our colleagues, but our associates and key stakeholders.

Despite having access to multiple programs and competencies around workplace behaviour, communication and what constitutes bullying or poor communication, many still get it wrong, and the impacts on employee productivity, workplace enjoyment, retention and health is enormous. Workplaces also have a legal responsibility to be proactive to stamp out certain disrespectful behaviours, and actively condone it.

Many programs focus on what constitutes high level and clear examples of poor communication or quite obvious examples of what to do or not to do, but workers need content they can relate to in the real world.

    • Technology has decreased face-to-face communication, especially among those raised online. We provide guidance for navigating this and improving real-world communication and understanding.

    • Our program emphasises basic communication, exploring how we interact at work through science, psychology, and real-life examples. Your team will gain insights into the effects of communication, understand various cultural views, and learn how workplace interactions influence health and well-being.

    • We extensively cover workplace behavior, bullying, harassment, discrimination, their effects, and related legislation.

    • Science of human communication

    • Neuroscience, and psychology of human interactions - chemicals, hormones and influences on behaviour

    • Cultural differences and perspectives on communication

    • Communication changes through roles, hierarchy and power in positions

    • Leadership versus management - the importance of leading by example, compassion, and understanding of communication in leadership roles

    • The impact of lifestyle on behaviour and communication in the workplace

    • External influences on behaviour - family, relationships, commitments, sleep, and how to navigate these

    • Tools to improve communication, and how to recocognise and address poor communication at all levels

    • What are the laws around bullying, harassment and discrimination, and what is or is not bullying and harassment

    • What should employees, managers and companies do about bullying, harassment and discrimination.

Goal setting, team building and the science of motivation and achievement

  • We often assume that setting and reaching goals both at work and in our personal lives are driven by a persons ability, whether they are “lazy” or simply not interested.

Or perhaps we assume that motivation to achieve goals is intrinsic in nature, and some people are simply more motivated than others?

Whilst there is some element of truth in variances in personality and drive, motivation and goal achievement is actually a science, and there are proven, evidence-based steps and methodology than can be implemented to help any person achieve goals, individually or as a team.

  • We have developed a program that teaches the proven science of setting and achieving goals. Motivation is at the core of goal setting, but what this looks like varies significantly for each person, and those in all roles, particularly a leadership capacity could benefit from understanding how to structure goals for success.

This program touches on differences in communication and personal style, but largely concentrates on the proven elements of goal setting, motivation, achievement and which elements influence success of a particular goal.

Team building is a broad term that elicits images of people standing in circles, holding hands and participating in group events and activities. Whilst these are fun, and in most circumstances effective, our program delves into the science of team building, and how to incorporate team building activities into everyday work practices.

  • Topics include:

    • The science of goal setting, and goal achievement

    • Psychology of motivation and achievement

    • Habit formation psychology

    • Team building - definitions, science of team building, workplace communication and cultural considerations

    • The impact of lifestyle, nutrition and physical activity on goal achievement in the workplace

    • External factors that influence success

    • The impact of goal achievement on health and wellbeing

Health, wellbeing and disease prevention package for workplaces

  • Wellbeing in the workplace is now a multi-billion dollar industry, with an abundance of programs to choose from, mostly centered around wellbeing activities such as fitness, yoga, massages and relieving stress, but also mental health and burnout. Businesses are almost compelled to offer wellbeing programs, not only for the positive impact on productivity, but also on employee retention and job satisfaction.

Whilst all the above initiatives are great, and definitely go a long way toward improving health, SL Health Consulting believe that education is at the forefront of health, and that learning how to reduce disease is a crucial aspect of health and wellbeing.

Our programs delve into the science, and explain the physiology, so that people can walk away informed, and able to make better lifestyle choices because they understand the ‘how’ and ‘why’.

  • Our programs explore common aspects of health, wellbeing and lifestyle that impact the workplace.

Learn the physiology and science behind food choices, sleep, substances, physical activity behaviour, mood, stress, energy levels, and how they influence our interactions and performance at work.

Learn the major lifestyle risk factors for heart disease, respiratory diseases / stroke, cancer, mental health issues such as depression and low mood, immunity, and how to improve your chances of avoiding disease.

    • Physical activity, and the impact of sedentary lifestyle and work roles. The science of how exercise improves health and wellbeing at every level.

    • Processed food and its impact on health. How to improve food choices at work, and at home.

    • Health through life stages. Workplaces have a mix of people from all walks of life, cultures and age ranges. We delve into health and wellbeing through life stages, such as early adulthood, parenting, 50’s/60’s, and ageing adults.

Healthy leadership & managing people

  • Leadership is skill, and like any skill, requires development and learning. The concept that leaders have all the answers will often lead to poor workplace outcomes, demotivation for staff and micro-management.

In fact, managers differ from leaders. There are many managers in the workforce, but to truly make a difference, create a healthy, thriving and productive workplace, managers need to lead. Managers need to be leaders, as leaders have followers, leaders inspire, and leaders empower!

  • Our program focuses on leadership rather than being a great manager. Management skills are certainly useful, and necessary, but leadership takes understanding more about yourself, how you communicate, how others communicate, and how to bring the best out of your team.

To bring the best out of your team, you need to learn the real skills of motivation, goal setting, psychology of teams, cultural differences, workplace environmental impacts and lifestyle / health factors that influence both yourself and your staff.

    • Course can be fully online and completed by the employee in their own time, or converted to an in-person, full day program or interactive webinar with workbooks and take home materials

    • Online version is fully interactive including learning modules, videos and scenarios, short quizzes and multiple choice, and activities to take into the real-world environment

    Topics include:

    • What is leadership? How do we become great leaders?

    • Science of human communication

    • Neuroscience, and psychology of human interactions - chemicals, hormones and influences on behaviour

    • Cultural differences and perspectives on communication

    • Communication changes through roles, hierarchy and power in positions

    • Leadership versus management - the importance of leading by example, compassion, and understanding of communication in leadership roles

    • The impact of lifestyle on behaviour and communication in the workplace

    • Being a compassionate and empathetic leader - empathy does not equal weakness. How to be more empathetic in the workplace

    • External influences on workplace performance. How does our home life, our health, our social lives, our core values and our upbringing influence how we work?

    • Nutrition and exercise for leaders - food, nutrition and physical activity plays an important role in your own health, your mood, your hormones and energy levels, and ultimately how you lead teams. We delve into how nutrition and exercise impact you as a leader
